Examples

Example 1 from APA Guideline

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

For Instances of Conversation Style Exchanges:

For the above-listed examples (APA, MLA), you may only ask an AI tool one question. This might be the "Prep-Only" in the AI usage scale, and an example might be "Give a brief explanation of erosion." However, in some instances, you may have a lengthy exchange with the tool. You would need to provide an acknowledgement statement for the contributions of the AI in your work.

The AI tool you used should be identified, and specific sections of the document/assignment/task that use AI-generated content need to be identified, along with a brief explanation about the level at which the AI system was used to generate the content.

Examples

"In the opening paragraph, I consulted Gemini on crafting a thesis statement that would outline the subtopics of my paper on the intersections of food systems and environmental implications. I asked for help in refining the statement for clarity, conciseness, and to be sure to include a mention of factory farming and food distribution."
